varying resolution

I'm not the best modeler in the world, but I have done some, mostly hard surface and simple stuff. I'm trying to improve my workflow, edge flow etc and make things a lot cleaner. SO i modeled the hand separately and now need to attach it to the rest of the arm. The problem is I can't figure out how to cut the edges so that I won't have triangles. Sometimes I can figure out how to connect things on other models, but a lot of time I get stumped. Is there any easy technique that I could use to be able to figure things like this out?

There are many, many techniques. You should peruse the topology sticky at the top of this section where it's discussed at great length.

You can use a pattern like this to wrap around 2 extraneous edge loops. Having tris or 5 sided polygons really isn't that big of a deal though.
