The champ - Facial rig experiment

Hi!
Lipsync animation done for testing facial rig of The Champ. I wanted to push the animation cartoon style and facial poses to a certain extreme to really see what could be achieved with the rig. The style might be a bit over the top, but I wanted to try it that way.

Comments and questions are SUPER welcomed!

The Champ: Character Design, modeling, rigging and animation by me(Jean-Renaud Gauthier)

Sound clip from the movie "HotRod".

All done in Maya 2012

Thanks guys!
Stop-motion? Yeah, I think I see what you mean, I actually omitted the motion on purpose(because I wanted to just "fake" motion blur with deformation) which might be one of the reason for this impression.

Cheers!

Uuuh, I love the style! I like this movie even more: https://vimeo.com/39210017
Could you post an image of the blendshapes and the rig?

Hi Laber,
I'm really glad you like it.
I'm thinking of eventually making a little rig show off video, but I don't know when.
But I don't want to show tech images yet. However, it's not such an exhaustive rig. I used Rapid Rig for the body rig, which is an auto rig actually.

For the facial, I used based from good old Jason Osipa book: Stop Staring

And added a few extra bones on the face to tweak some parts if I needed to. And added a lattice on top of the head for extreme deformations. That's about it.
One thing that really helped me is to sculpt ALL the blendshapes in Zbrush.

Sorry to make you wait for tech material, but I want to do more animations with it before revealing it all.

The video you mentioned actually gives a very good cue of the blendshapes I used:

Hey JRGauthier! Great job on building a very fun and expressive rig! I think in the animation example though the mouth shapes are a bit too extreme for this animation, it gives it a sort of poppy almost stop motiony feel, I think that's what Whitmire meant to say. Anyway, looking forward to seeing your tech vid if you ever decide to share it

Thanks for the comment Archanex.
You are correct about the mouth, it does feel a bit snappy. It was kind of done that way on purpose, but I think it's just too much for the sound track(and maybe it also clashes with the smoother face and body animation... )... I wonder if that's what you meant by: "mouth shapes are a bit too extreme for this animation"?

Haha I keep watching this. It's awesome man. The more I watch it the more I really enjoy the style. I'd love to see more. Also thought you'd like to know that our boss over at Blur loved it.

Thanks Nick!
I'm really glad you like it more and more. I had many people with different opinions about the style, some people love it, some people say it's too much. But now, I can say that the boss at Blur loves it so they can just shut up! That's awesome!! hehe

I'm going to do more for sure!
Thanks for taking the time to write back dude! Cheers to you and your boss!
