Given the length of patents, it's entirely possible we may see more of Wacom's expire in the near future. Naturally this would be a really good thing for consumers, so long as there are companies out there willing to risk everything it would take to produce and market their competing product. There is also the potential for a patent lawsuit from Wacom to consider, even if it is expired. This all makes it a pretty risky venture.

I look forward to seeing what Wacom produces, though not the price which I agree will certainly be very high. I always figured they would do this eventually, especially with how popular this type of tablet has become. I'm only surprised it took them this long.

Thanks for the links. I can't wait for Genius priced non battery powered pen

Can't wait for Genius to release their own 'Cintic' line of device too.

For the vast majority of drawing you only need 256 levels. And if it's just for sketching then it's nice to have any pressure sensitivity at all really.

Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro, been out since September. Has 1024 levels, 1080p
screen and pretty decent specs for an ultrabook.

My laptop died a few months before Windows 8 hit, so I picked up a Samsung Series 7 Slate... I put Windows 8 on it once it launched, so it is close to an ATIV or a Surface Pro.

Works wonders... I love it. It doesn't last as long as an ARM based, but I didn't expect it to. I have an ARM based Flyer tablet for those needs.

The only problem with ZBrush on a touch/pen only device is how keyboard shortcut dependent I am on my workflow...

The Wacom driver took a while when Windows 8 hit, but it got there... I expect the same for the Surface Pro.

Try installing ArtDock. It's worked wonders for me in replacing the need for a keyboard when working on my tablet.

My old supervisor had the same Series 7 as you, which was one of the big factors in me buying the new one. (for anyone curious, The old one was fantastic, the new one's just minor but very welcome upgrades: battery, resolution, sensitivity)
