Selection patterns

Hello, I was wanting to use something like the selection patterns in the poly modelling tools to create some interesting patterns for floor tiles. Specifically it's sci-fi style type floors for a level. Is there any other way of creating complex tiling patterns for non-slip, raised bump patterns on floors? That look cool obviously, thats what I'm after.
