Quick/fast third-party content survey

Hi, we put together a simple survey with a few questions around whether you purchase or download third-party content for your 3D projects. Even if you don't, we'd like to hear your voice in the survey as to why you don't. The survey shouldn't take more than 3 minutes, much less if you don't use third-party content.

Done.

I can tell you, that 99% of all the (model) problems comes from format conversions; as about the only format that works across all platforms is still --- OBJ.

Dont expect the companies who say they'll convert it for you to do a proper job - they dont.

Exporting with turbo/mesh smooth on, exporting as triangulated not quad, exported with invalid texture co-oords, exporting with unicode names. Bad end caps (max generally). Duplicate polys/vertices, unwelded seams, inability to subd a model. All make it a nightmare. Dont even get try animated models working, not unless you're using the same app, you wont have a chance. Unspecified plugin use, often. HDRI's that dont have any significant dynamic range. HDRI's that have no backplates, or limited options. Textures that are flattened and/or saved in a lossy format. Normal maps as a substitute for geometry, that's not spec'd. Poor web sites, poor searching options, no polygon counts. no wire-frame displays, small preview images. Annoying long payment procedure, limited payment options, Insanely high prices, insane T&C's, unfair splits for the artists involved, no real comeback if your not satisfied (except 1), no communication with the artist.

And even if you don't mind all of the above, always remember - you'll still have work to do, which factors in to the cost.

Some artists do take the time and get it right, they understand what other artists want and need, those are a shining beacon in a sea of flotsam and jetsam.

But remember those artists that do take the time and get it right - are as rare a condom in the Vatican.

Hey Ken, i'm forwarding your message to SI-Community, as most forum addicted softies seem to be hanging there now. If you want you can also reach a lot of people through the mailing list... just saying
