GTX 660 Ti 2GB or 3GB for Mari ?

I'm thinking about getting Mari and would like to know if the 2GB/3GB Vram will draw a significant difference on a GTX 660 Ti for this specific software. This card is not supported by the Foundry but I guess it will be ok . I know Mari doesn't take benefit from CUDA but I do play games , so a workstation card is not an option .
Also for GPU rendering (iray,Vray RT...) , does the Vram amount matter apart from the card performance ?

thanks for answering

Hi,

In general, the more GPU memory the better. Using higher bit depths and buffer resolutions will certainly use more memory. It is also important to take note of how many other applications will be running at the same time. The more OpenGL / GPU applications you're running, the more memory you need.

I've seen people running 4 Mayas, 2 Nukes, Mari, V-Ray etc, 5 flip-books etc. They all need GPU ram to work, so the extra really comes in handy.

If you have the budget, go for the 3GB although, Mari, running on it's own, will do very nicely with 2.

Thanks for the fast reply , I will go for the 3GB for an optimized use.

Hi,

Do you have any chance to download the file interior.max from the below address and render it with iray using only the GPU at 100 iterations?

https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=c63a...71&sc=documents

By looking at the close GPU frequency and same amount of CUDA cores I suspect it to be almost on a par with the GTX 670. Can you render and add your results on this thread :

ps. You need to setup the latest product update to have iray run on Kepler chipset.

If it doesn't bother you much can you install a trial version with Product Update 6, because many folks are looking for the best card for Iray in price and performance.

I suspect 660 to be not very low compared to 680, on that case I may consider buying 660's for SLI.

Actually I'm curious to see how my card will perform with iray. Will try it tomorrow

I would like to know how the newer GeForce perform in Maya in case you find that out. I think my ATI is dying, that and it is older

I read and heard reports of this or that issue, slow downs and so on, but while I have no benchmarking done at all, so I can't really give any answers about slowdowns, I've been happily using a 670 with Maya, Soft, Houdini, MudBox and some other things with no issues, and my GF has been using a 660M with just as much luck with Mari, Houdini and Maya.

Mix of Linux and Windows on my workstation, win7 on hers.
