clouds without maya fluids

I want to make volumetric cloud effect like this one . But withou maya fluids.
I want some smoke which would cast self-shadows. Define structure and opacity of smoke with maya 3d textures and overall shape would be defined by some polygonal model. It must be possible with mental ray but I don't know how and I can't find any tutorials for that.

why don't you want to use fluids? fluids is best way to do it I think.

Have you tried using the mia_material_x, and some volumetric shaders for your cutout opacity and transparency? I doubt you'll be able to come close to fluids with this method and animation would be out of the question, but you might be able to match your dust example at least. Piece of cake in most apps; never really tried for less realistic clouds in Maya, myself though.

I used to do clouds with clouds particles, it works but not as good as fluids, so why bother?
