.STEP files not importing with DC

I have always imported .step and .igs files into maya just fine with 2011. I'm at a new studio with maya 2012 and 2013 and neither imports .STEP files anymore. I immediately get an error saying:
/ Error: Failed to find translator. //
// Error: //
// Error: line 1: Error reading file. //

There are two stations with maya 2012 and 2013 and 1 laptop running 2011. I tried importing on all systems and the laptop running 2011 was the only one able to import the files properly. Is there a problem with the direct connect plugin or a fix for it? If not is there atleast some free external program I can convert with? Meshlab is usually my go to but doesn't have support for .STEP.

never mind figured it out. Direct connect was never installed on the machines in question even though it shows up as loaded and active in the plugin manager. Guess it's just a small glitch but certainly was driving me crazy for about an hour.
