Graduate School Descision: Dexel or Depaul???

Hello CG Community,

My name is Josh and I recently graduated from an undergrad school with no real program for animation or design. I am very passionate about computer animation with a focus on 3d modeling (not really interested in 2d stuff) and possibly rigging and I really want to work in the field. I am more interested in the art side of things as opposed to the programming side and I am also more interested in animation and modeling for tv shows and movies rather than video games. I recently got admitted to both Drexel and Depaul's Masters program and I am unsure which one to go to they are both equally weighing the same on my mind. So I am looking for opinions on which one I should attend!

Drexel is much closer to home, more expensive by about 10,000, ranked higher by Princeton Review, and seemingly has more connections for jobs after college. But the courses do not seem as specialized to animation and modeling and rigging as the courses of Depaul.

Depaul is much farther away, costs less, ranked lower, but it seems to have more focused courses on what I really want to learn. But I do not think it has as many connections to studios and companies for post grad careers an internships as Drexel does and Drexel is more well-known.

PLEASE HELP ANY OPINIONS WILL BE GREAT!!!
And is there a difference between Masters of Science and Master of Arts in terms of after graduation?

DREXEL UNIVERSITY
-Princeton Review Rank 3/15 meaning top 3 in top video game design (although I want to work for a movie or entertainment company)

Master of Science

Check out SVA, Pratt, RIT and SCAD

I would strongly suggest if getting a grad degree is important, particularly if your interest is 3d, check out SVA, RIT, SCAD and maybe Pratt Institute. They are the top grad programs in 3d and very well known. SVA in particular has some amazing connections. My daughter is being interviewed by Dreamworks and has an "in' though the school for an internship at Blue Sky.

If you are willing to get a certificate and not a degree, check out Gnomon School of Visual Effects. It is particularly strong in modeling.

I don't think any of the schools that you mentioned above, perhaps with the exception of Dupaul, are as strong in terms of either rankings or connections as the ones that I mentioned, especially for SVA, SCAD and Gnomon.

Hey man,

In my 3 years in Chicago, I don't recall running into a single Depaul grad in the 3D world. There aren't too many studios in Chicago any ways. Defiantly take a visit there if you haven't already though. That part of town just out side of LP is sort of a love/hate type area. Its more of a mixed income area, so on one street you've got really expensive town homes, but the next one over could be littered with glass from broken into cars. The campus itself from what I've seen is pretty old and dated.

Usually the difference between the BS, MS, and the BA and MFA are the maths and science requirements.

Thanks

I appreciate the info AJ I do plan on visiting Depaul as well as Drexel and I have also heard that there are not many studios in Chicago. And the fact that Drexel is ranked better in general makes it is seem to me that its a better option for connections and careers after college.

As for other options taxguy I appreciate the other suggestions but I have applied to SCAD previously and RIT and didn't get in and I am not really interested in staying in NY. Also if you look both Drexel and Depaul Grad schools up they are ranked pretty highly especially Drexel so I assume they have some good connections. I am not planning on applying to any other programs so I will be deciding between these two. I noticed on some other threads that your daughter was thinking and researching about Depaul did you find out any other information. And I was just curious what her experience at SVA was and how the school helped her in terms of her career and academics.

Thanks I appreciate the help.

Response: My daughter decided against Depaul for several reasons. First, we also rarely met anyone who either went to Depaul or knew someone who worked in the industry from Depaul. Thus, for the same reason that AJ1 noted, she rejected Depaul. Also, she didn't want a religious oriented school under any circumstances. Third, there really isn't a lot of animation work and studios in Chicago. Manhattan, on the other hand , has LOTs of opportunities plus is as great a city for a student as anyone could ask for in terms of things to do, see and eat. Thus, she decided on SVA, whose high graduate school ranking didn't hurt either.
However, we don't know much about Drexel's program since it is relatively new. Thus, I can't comment on it.
