Bend Deformer and IK Chain problem

Hi CG Society,

Im hoping someone can help me with a rigging problem Im having. I have a very basic character rig, Im just using IK chains and bend deformers instead of full character rigs.

Everything works fine on their own but together problems start to arise. Ive attached an image to make it a little clearer. To get the character to work, there is a bend deformer where the accordion is. All the upper body which includes face, backpack, arms, and aerial are children of the bend deformer!

When I animate the bend deformer the IK chains do not follow. They remain in position. I can still access the IK chains and controllers just fine but the scene becomes messy like the image. I would like the IK Chain bones and defomers to always follow along.

Would a Constrain tag help? Ive tried using one but I dont know much about them. Ive tried setting it to PSR but it just moves the arm itself!

Here's a link to the image http://www.flickr.com/photos/746573.../in/photostream

Ive recently joined Digital Tutors and I was watching a tutorial on rigging. The tutor mentioned the Constraint Tag and how to set its priority. Would that help my IK Chain to follow the character when the bend deformer is being animated?

Many thanks,
Pauly

Deformers only work on point objects like meshes and splines, they can't affect objects on a transform level. There are ways you can 'stick' objects to a mesh that's deforming but it can get fiddly in terms of priorities. If I was doing this I'd cheat it and use some xpresso to move the roots of the arm rigs to make them seem like they are following the deformer, range mappers are your friend there.

Cheers,
Brian

Hey Brian,

Thanks very much for the information and the tip. I was playing about with the basic Set Driver and Set Driven commands and I was getting some results. Its not perfect but its much better than what I had it as. The driver/driven xpresso tag also adds some extra animation to the movement so thats a nice little extra

Cheers mate,
Pauly
