wanting to learn realistic painting

Hi there I'm wondering if anybody have any tutorial or advice on how to make a realistic painting of a person. I have been trying to get better but I just can't seem to get my paintings to look realistic. I wonder how do some of you guys and gals do it. I have looked at many tutorials but I just can't seem to get my stuff to look as good. I don't know if it's just that I don't have enough talent or is it just I don't really know what makes a realistic painting look realistic, but any help wopuld be much apperiated.

You maya want to try copying an old master painting. Paintings students often do this.
Find an old master painting that you like and try your best to copy it. Kepp working on it until you get it right.
