seeing my separate character layer over BG in Renderview

I am lighting my character on a separate layer but would like to see it working over the background render layer (on a different layer) in the render view.

So basically temp comping in Maya.

I don't want to combine the passes together though.

What is the best way to do this?

I've googled quite a bit to find a tutorial but found one in another language that I couldn't get to work.

In theory this should be pretty simple.

Please help.
