poor college student need some hardware help

Hello this is my first CGtalk post and thank you for having me.
Here's my problem, like so many I'm a poor full time college that's currently employed temporarily for a company and I'm a first time father so that makes it hard to have top of the line equipment. I want to major in modeling, rigging and animation but my laptop is four years old and my desk3ws top is from 2001.

So im looking for a desktop that's around $300 - $800 and i want to stay away from Dell products, i had a bad experience with them. also i never built a a pc before so i think that's out of the question but i would like a desktop that i can upgrade later down the road.
