Question What type of workstation can you recommend

I'm currently in grad school working on my masters in animation and visual fx. For the most part when I'm not using the schools computers to do my work I use my laptop. I currently have a first generation macbook pro which for the most part has served its purposes for my work. But, as the level of work increases it's apparent that my laptop is not powerful enough to suit my needs.

So, my question to you is, what type of desktop would you recommend that will last me for some time and will enable me to pretty much do most of my work from the comfort of my home. I do a majority of my work in Maya and After Effects and I'm looking for something to serve as a development and rendering machine.

Thank you in advance for you recommendations.
