Question Regarding Car Modeling

I had a quick question for anyone who has experience with modeling cars.

What would be the best way to go about modeling a photo realistic car? I have attempted a few different ways but I cannot seem to get the groves you see on cars where doors/panels go. Is it better to model them separately then combine them or to model them as a whole and manipulate the edges?
