how to add geometry to a cloth surface?


Noob - I'm trying to experiment with Marvelous Designer clothes in Maya.

If I import quite a dense animated alembic cache, how would I go about adding geometry that follows and deforms with the animated surface, like zippers or braiding?

I was trying to create curves on the animated cloth surface - is that the way to go? and should I be trying to create these guide curves with Paint effects, or hair follicles?, or is there another way?

any workflow advice would be great
