What is the best method considering the model will be animated

I'm trying to model a character but I can't seem to match the number of edges of the head and body so that when I combine them and attach the edges I don't have any issues.
So I'm not sure what is the best solution for this considering that I will animate the character. Also I've been having the same problem with the hands and arms and feet and legs.
Should I go with making some triangles on the neck/wrists/ankles or having some shapes with 5vertices?
