Layer based Sound Editing software?

I want software where i can bring clips and layer them on each other maybe trim duplicate or do whatever, but then it needs to be adjustable so if at any moment I can delete any layer or adjust it according my needs. this is something I missing in sound forge, is there any good software which is layer based?

Pretty much all the modern DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) software have this. Pro Tools is the most well-known one in the mainstream, but there are many others like Cakewalk Sonar, Steinberg Cubase, Apple Logic, MOTU Digital Performer, Image-Line FL Studio, Magix Samplitude, Cockos Reaper, Propellerhead Reason, PreSonus Studio One, Ableton Live, etc. There are freeware apps that can do it too, like Audacity, Ardour, and a bunch of others.

If you want swanky and midi capabilities Sonar's Cakewalk is the best. If you want FREE and a damn good little editor then Audacity (like Lunatique mentioned) is amazing, light and fast.
