Amateur Modeler from Kansas

I've always wanted to do 3D modeling. I love it, and it's quite possibly the only thing I'm pretty good at. And, obviously, I want to do that for a living.

But there aren't major schools in Kansas for 3D modeling, or hardly anything related to 3D modeling or anything else that goes into making video games. The only 3D modeling course I can find are either from questionable schools, or are for teaching engineers to use CAD, which is something I already know how to do, but I don't want to be an engineer.

So what I'm trying to get at, is what colleges have online courses I can take? What would I need to do and be proficient at if I didn't go to college? How big does my portfolio need to be to prove I'm a damn good modeler?
