How to animate a bank of stage lights

I need to animate various patterns in a bank of stage lights (similar to the effect in the link below, but a much larger bank--more lights). I'm thinking that mograph can accomplish this but I need some tips on how to set it up.

one requirement is that the lights have to animate on/off (fade up and down, not pop on/off) again similar to how they fire in the reference below

should I create a clone with a simple fade up fade down animation? And then trigger that animation in the cloner somehow with effectors, like a spline as a source?
Or can the shader effector accomplish this without animating the light/clone first?

thanks for the tips!

I seem to remember a Tim Clapham tutorial covering this (though that can be said for just about everything these days).

A light inside a Grid cloner alongside a Shader effector could probably do it..

Here's a starter file; may not be the most optimal technique, but it appears to be working.

Notice that in the cloner itself, under the Transform tab, I've adjusted the color down to 50ish; you may need to play this a bit more.

Also, it's probably best to keep Render Instances OFF while working with lights in cloners. Things can get wonky otherwise (or crashy with some 3rd party renderers).

thanks Luke! I'll have a look when I get home tonight. I didn't mention that I'll actually be using a custom/unique texture for each light (not like a generic lamp for each), so I'm likely going to just be generating a luma matte (black/white/greyscale) with the clones to fade up and down these custom textures--but I imagine your file will give me some ideas on the setup

cheers

Here's a similar shader based approach using a Mograph color shader as a layer set to multiply, with the texture beneath it:

shader effector color mode should also be mentioned here...it all comes down to the shape/arrangement of clones, how many colors, in which way/direction they should be animated.

thanks Darrin, I had a feeling that would be one way to tackle it. I need to read up on that one though, I am only familiar with using it for random noise--not for more specific tasks

hey again! I downloaded your project but didn't see any animation/keyframes, did I miss something?

Nope, wasn't animated. Go into the Shader Effector & play around with the shader settings to see how changes can be made.
