How to create a "ground collapsing beneath someones feet" type of effect?

Hey,

I hope this subforum is okay for my question.

For a VFX project we're doing in school, I'm going to do an effect where concrete floor tiles collapses and falls down behind a walking actor. I've been trying to research the best way to do this but haven't found much. I guess I should somehow project the ground texture onto animated/dynamics driven tiles, but I'm not sure what the best way would be.

I've attached a frame from the shot so you can see what I'm working with. Only the part in the middle (2-4 or so meters of width), where the actor is walking, are going to remain - the rest is going to be set extension. The camera is not static, but tilting upwards slowly. The bright square stone tiles are not going to fall down, only the concrete tiles.

The software I'm going to use is mostly NukeX and Maya 2014. We have some other programs available in school, too, if you'd suggest using something else, but I'm most comfortable with these.

Thanks in advance for any help, and if I've been unclear, please ask!

ps. I should note that all the concrete tiles visible in the final shot should eventually fall, not only the ones where he steps. So a lot of tiles are going to fall and therefore a procedural-ish approach would be nice. ds.

Look up texture reference objects for Maya. That should let you lock the texture onto the upper surface of your tiles so that it doesn't slide around when the blocks start falling away.
