2D Game...HOW TO?

I'm making a 2D sidescroller game with a friend of mine, and we've ran into few issues.
  1. Native resolution? We were thinking of just using a single resolution, what do you think it should be?
  2. Which texture size would you recommend?
  3. Would you recommend using pre-rendered objects with textures or just create object sprites with a possibility to change textures within our game dev program?
