Alien planet environment

An environment painting for the Flash Gordon competition happening over in the Daily Sketch Forum. It is supposed to show the alien planet (sulphur rock mining in the foreground with city in the background) and as a secondary point, the crashed pod with three people clambering out.

The lighting and colors seem kind of random here. You have all that overwhelming purple in the background and in the sky, and there's all this neon green in the plants, but then the road and the buildings don't seem to be taking on enough of the color cast of your overall environment (which should be purple). If there's strong purple cast that turns the entire background and sky purple, why would it not do the same to the area in the foreground? What are your light sources in this scene?
