Do I need to learn ZBrush for game assets?

Hi,

Well, as the title says really.
I'm interested in 3d modelling for games. My plan is to focus on smaller asset-type modelling and environments first before I advance to characters. My earlier understanding was that Z-Brush was used for characters and assets were built wholly in 3ds Max/Maya/whatever. However, I've since seen Z-Brush being used to create assets - for the normal maps I presume? - so, back to my question, do I need to also learn Z-Brush if I'm only creating assets/environments?

Yes.





Zbrush is used not just because of the normal maps, it's used because certain things are faster, or easier to make in it. So learn it or Mudbox or Modo or Blender, because certain things are just easier to sculpt, or paint in such a package.

I would say yes. ZBrush seems to be massively expanding in popularity, and this is reflected in the number of college courses available (at least where I live). It seems that everyone and his or her dog are studying ZBrush and Maya at the very least.
