Crash course on exterior lighting

I am a motion graphics artist, and recently I started messing around with creating 3D environments, like cities and things like that. I want to understand more about environmental lighting and ways I can make it look like it has some depth to it. I have found a few videos but I am looking for someone to go more in depth of when to use HDRi images etc. I am operating on R13 Broadcast so I don't have the Physical sky package. Lighting scenarios for storms and such. Just curious if anyone knows of a site or artist that has some vids like that and not just breakdowns without explanations. Thanks for any suggestions, it is greatly appreciated!
