copy UV's by proximity...

So I've run into this a few times, but I've managed to avoid it and hack my way out of it while never solving the problem.

What is the best way to copy a UV map from one mesh to another mesh with world space proximity as a basis for what to copy where instead of point order?

I ask because I've tried LW's copy uv tool, but it works based on point order. So two meshes that could be identical, but have different point orders because of being translated from OBJ or something like that, won't copy UVs properly. They'll sometimes look the same in the UV window, but it will be the wrong points in the wrong places. At least in my experience.
