Software advice for animation film?

I want to create some animation of space (galaxies, nebulas) as part of a movie. Can someone give me advise on which software(s) best to use?

I have experience with 3dsMax but it doesn't strike me as a place to create an animation movie. Maybe I'm wrong.

I have experience with Adobe Premiere Pro but it does not seem to contain any serious 3d making tools.

I've heard about After Effects a lot though never used it.

I presume the typical process would involve a 3d program to create the animation and then exporting that into a movie making software.
