VR would take off 10 times quicker if 3D content creation were more accessible to ordinary artists than it is today.

There's nothing really wrong with the hardware side - GPUs are getting faster, CPUs are going massively multi-core, headset resolution and ergonomics will get better over time.

The bottleneck is the lack of fast smart-workflow 3D software that normal artists (filmmakers, photographers, storytellers) can get into in a few weeks and create good VR content with.

When 3D TVs failed in the market, the problem was lack of worthwhile content for 3D TVs. There just weren't enough watchable 3D films on the market, and the whole 3D TV initiative collapsed despite massively expensive marketing campaigns.

VR has a simlar problem. Somebody needs to think hard about creating 3D software that makes VR content easier to produce.

Otherwise its 3D TVs all over again - 3 to 5 years of VR being pushed hard all over the place, then the gradual news that more and more companies and content creators are abandoning VR because it didn't make the kind of money that was hoped for.
