On track, but certainly not their most profitable. I would imagine that ET and Jurassic Park have made more. And box office Mojo confirms my suspicions...

$10m budget -> $793m return = $783m profit

$63m budget -> $970m return = $907m profit.

I would wager that D2 will make another 80m before drying up which only puts it at about $675m in profit.

But we're talking profitable, not how much they made. Batman never made any profit, right?

I'd believe ET is up there though. That cost like 10 million and made some ridiculous amount. When it was first released it made more than 100 million domestic, and that was in 83?

Oops, it was 82, and the final figure I was able to find was 792 million worldwide

Does that include what they make out of associated product marketing? Or is that box-office only?

It's hard to tell. It might be a plain mistake like forgetting to specify "animated" movie, sensationalism in titling, or it might be true and previous smash hits might not have been as profitable due to different production/distribution associates and quotas or something else.

There are also movies that, to date, still have hardly made any profit. Ask some of the cast and crew of the original Star Wars trilogy if they've seen any residues or royalties, the movies are, in some regards, still in deficit
The magic of Hollywood accounting.
