Funnel Web Spider

I've been playing with an old model of a funnel Web I did some time back. I've re-modeled it in Zbrush and poly-painted it. Here are a few quick test renders with a blend of materials in Vray for Maya with displacement maps, normal maps, specular maps blended with subsurface material. Next I'll add some hair before making an bush/undergrowth environment to put him in.

Watching Eric Keller's insect DVD has been a help.

Any suggestions, ideas, improvements and handy tips are welcome. Does anyone know a good way to create a thick funnel like web? I did a quick test with Paint effects with some ok results but there are no doubt better ways.

Here are some links to photos of Funnel Webs:

Here is a turntable of the old version which really didn't have proper texturing/shaders - subsurface etc.

Cool man! I think spider looks great.

The funnel web would definitely be a tricky challenge. They seem really dense, and almost volumetric. In most of the pics I pulled up on google, you can't even make out the individual fibers. What do you plan on doing with your spider once you get the web modeled? Are you going to make a still, or a short animation?

I'm not sure if you've seen this, but its a really great watch.

Thanks AJ

I would like to eventually rig and animate him but for now I just want to do a still. My plan is to quickly add some hair tonight and create an environment of undergrowth with dead brown leaves/sticks and pose him like THIS. Then I'll experiment with some webbing with paint effects and see what can be achieved. Their webs are tricky - like you say you can hardly see the fibers.

There are a number of different funnel web spiders that we have here in Aus in terms of color but I'll probably go with THIS brown/red version because It's in keeping with the environment I want to create... although I really like the shell of THIS black one so perhaps I'll do a few versions in Zbrush.

I've seen that spider short. Love it!

Thanks again for taking the time. Appreciated

Nath

I just added a some hair in maya. Might need to tone them down a little later. Does his backside look to much like a coconut? Perhaps.

More hairs now to be added elsewhere...

Just playing with some of the Vray blend shaders with subsurface and Vray Mtl for spec/reflections. I'm about to give him a hair make over and put him on a tree where. Perhaps I will take the render between some leaves....

That last render looks amazing! after you get the hair back on this guy I would call it a complete success! it would look really bad ass in more of an "about to strike" pose with its head reared up and fangs exposed!

nice work

Thanks Lee,

Yea I'll have to render a few angles and, of cause, a bad ass one with fangs ready and dripping with drops of venom

I would love to rig him properly and animate him as well but render times may not afford me that possibility. Might do it anyways....

Cheers

Hi! Nice work!

I think the web would'nt be so tricky, for what i saw, it looks almost like cotton, but pretty smooth and regular, i think it would be ok with a cotton/fog shader, otherwise with blur in the background you would'nt see the difference!

the pose you choose for him is just awesome, can't wait for seeing it!

Cheers Scorpiostyle,

Yea I will have to have a play with creating a web soon. Maya's Paint effects have some possibilities. This was a quick play - with tweaking and shaders it might work.

Just a quick render test using Mental Ray instead of Vray. I'll finish him/her at some point.... For now... I'm enjoying just messing around.

Still just playing around with background. I'm not sure I like where this is going but I like the idea of having a story behind an image with a funnel web so I'll continue to mess around.
