Question Creation process for photo realistic Fur Character vs Cg Movie Fur Character

Hi... I have been pondering over this thought for sometime now and am hoping to get some useful advice from all the experts on this forum regarding difference in the approach between creating a photo realistic fur character for a live action movie vs creating a fur character for a animated cg movie...
Most of the studios doing cg animated movies would probably already have a very advanced hair/fur pipeline with either off the shelf hair/fur tools or thier own proprietry tool coupled with shaders that helps churn out pretty decent looking furry characters ...
But how do you change your approach incase say there is a requirement for a photorealistic output...
