Very nice to have Cycles updated.....

Using the updater i get the error "unable to the cycles 4d folder" and i don't manage to fix that, don't know why but it keeps changing back.
Would be good to have a direct download link, the one i received when buying goes to the older version.

Thanks, Robert

EDIT.... Never mind, my mistake, I accidentally had it installed in two folders . Fixed now.

Wow!  That's an impressive Cycles update.  Can't wait to dig into it.

While I'm enjoying exploring Cycles, I must take issue with this statement. I much prefer those render engines that leverage the native Xpresso node environment (e.g. Arnold, Redshift), which (while having some limitations) is fast and familiar to navigate. Cycles node environment feels clunky, slow and bolted on, and is sometimes mystifying in its functionality. For instance, I am very used to the native C4D edit fields and UI elements, and cranking values up or down is fast and intuitive (clicking and dragging up and down to scale a value, for instance). I know that if I "show attributes", I can access those familiar UI elements, but why isn't that on by default? Even the text antialiasing is strange, and doesn't respect retina/HiDPI screens.

There may be amazing advantages of this system that I haven't grokked yet, but so far I am skeptical of the value of this particular part of the Cycles UI.

Cycles looks great. Does it utilize multiple gpu's?
I tried the demo and was impressed, but didn't purchase because I'm reluctant to learn a node based shader workflow at the moment.

It does. I have friends who are using it on 4x1080TI's and loving it! lol

I have 4xGTX 1080's, but they're not TI's. I've got kids to feed. I believe then, that the demo I tried was limited to 1 GPU. Thanks for clarifying.

I would  love if cycles would let us choose the size of the UI icons., like we can do with C4D icons (small / medium / large)

As others have stated, the native renderer doesn't render smoke/fire very well. Even when it does render it looks like crap.

I'm able to cache a vdb out and then bring that into redshift. However, I'm finding it kind of a crapshoot to see what I have BEFORE spending the effort of exporting to vdb. Is the only solution is I have to guess the settings and then export to vdb before I can see results? Is there a solution or step I'm missing to this process? C4D viewport just isn't good with ballparking detail.

with the default settings I dont see any prep time, but with the voxel size to 1, I had a prep time of 22 seconds.

you might know this already, but you can crank up the viewport preview quality quite significantly, it is explained in the explosia fx section of the video manual. but i agree, the workflow isn't ideal.

I think that's harsh. I've had some lovely looking renders within C4D – I just had to wait for them that's all. Still, given how TFD rips through simulations and renders, Explosia's workflow isn't ideal. I didn't know that I'd need to buy Cycles (or another renderer) to get anything useable from it, in terms of speed.

xpExplosiaFX - Rendering Guide

A quick guide  - how to set up and render xpExplosiaFX from X-Particles 4 using Cycles 4D and how to export the data as VDB data and use that to render in Redshift and Octane.
We hope some of you may find this useful - thank you

Cycles looks great. It seems to be a musthave for XP. Have to look in my wallet if there is any money left.
