keep existing groups when duplicating meshes?

Hi All,
in order to play around with shape variations I would like to create several copies of a basemesh inside a single file. When doing so I'd like to retain existing Polygon-Groups or other Groups already established. Is that somehow possible? Thus far I lose all groups upon duplication.
Using separate colours and using these instead of groups or converting these into groups after duplication may do the trick in quite a few cases, but it's not always applicable, e.g. on selections of border edges or vertices. Thanks for any input!
