FXWars Avatar: Bending Arts!: Morhaf Mehena

Hi there,

This will be my first FXWars challenge, and a very interesting one indeed. Hope I'll finish it in time!

I had this entire fight sequence storyboarded, but then I saw it all had to be one continuous shot... so I'll just be doing one shot

Cheers!

Thanks again for the extension!

Here's a storyboard I originally made for my entry. It's a short bending battle, with 2 benders that bend all 4 elements (for testing purposes only of course, as this contradicts the very storyline of Avatar).

Because the challenge only allows for one continuous shot, (and due to lack of time and resources) I decided to only do shot #08. Maybe some day I'll get around to actually make everything.. but I don't have a camera (or crew) right now, so yeah..

More (actual) WIP's coming soon.

Enjoy! Hope at least someone can maybe get some inspiration out of this.

Here's a quick preview of the mesh for my waterbending effect. The simulation is not complete yet, I still have to work on the ending. I also need to resim my fire.. Hope I'll make it.

There's a lot going on in the scene as you can see. Gonna try and make some secondary particles as well.

Also, the deadline is tomorrow, and there have been no thread posts on this forum since december 12th? What's up with that?

My fire sim is getting there

I actually had to matchmove my footage all over again after discovering it was jittering for a few frames..

Almost done! Sorry it's taking so long, school's been keeping me busy..

Here are some test renders

Second image isn't rotoscoped yet. The fire and some secondary particles are still missing.

Fire is done and composited. I'm just waiting for my water to finish rendering. Everything else is done!

Okay here is my final entry. The water didn't quite turn out how I hoped, but meh. A lot of things went wrong with the steam as well, but I think it looks pretty good despite of the problems. The fire turned out pretty good IMO. Especially those last few frames before completely turning into steam. The fire on the grass is CG too. I made it to experiment with the settings, and because there was a distracting bag lying on the ground.

As this was my first time compositing something on live action footage, here are some things I learned:

- Do the most important things first
- Plan your work accordingly so you'll make your deadlines
- Always make 120% sure that your matchmove is 100% stable BEFORE moving on
- Save your files. A LOT. Seriously, don't forget.
- Always double check your render settings. ALWAYS
- ALWAYS render with an alpha channel, even if you think you wont need it
- Don't use the standard Banji shader in Cinema 4d for water.
- Always do a low res test render of your final animation before rendering full res
- Do some research in final filetype render settings (quality vs filesize)

All in all, this was a really fun and challenging project to work on, and I learned a lot. So thanks for waiting for me to finish this!
