Weird UV selection issue

$orgSel = `ls -sl`;
$orgShellSel = `polySelectBorderShell 0`;
	
select $orgShellSel;
select -deselect $orgSel;

...last line does not seem to run - or it doesn't work.
However, if I manually run "select -deselect $orgSel;" afterwards, Maya does the deselection.
Inconsistency or am I missing something?

polySelectBorderShell is a wrapper script and has NO return value. $orgShellSel will always be nothing.

And a quick way to see whats going on in variables is print($variable + "\n"); also never despise `size $variable` for debugging purposes. Saves you time and the forum threads.
