Short Film Lighting

Hola!

These are some stills from the animated short film I am working on! I am very far from a good lighting artist, but I was wondering if anyone could offer me any tips on how I can make this look better?

And is there any way to change the color of a Gobo light? I have a tree pattern in my main sunlight, but that unfortunately restricts me to a white light, when I want a yellowish orange light.

Good job so far.

I think you should start by focusing on what is going on in each scene with the character. I don't really get what's happening with the LT. Dan rig there in each scene. Focus on lighting your character with the same precision as you light the background. With the rest of the renders there are a lot of really bright areas next to really dark areas, especially by the windows. See what you can do about smoothing out those areas using GI or exposure control. I think your wall textures could also use a little work and a for goodness sakes give that poor helmet some more subdivisions! haha

Thanks so much for the feedback! I am going to make these changes and post the results.

P.S. haha you noticed the helmet needed to be smoothed out, I didnt think it was that obvious lol

Try to not let the technicalities of cg lighting take focus from the fact of what you are making: emotive pictures.
Try and take you frames into photoshop and desaturate them into a greyshaded image.
Are your values as they should be?

Perhaps paint a few value studies before going into maya to light the scene.

I say this because to me, you values are all over the place. Focus is scattered around the image. You could benefit a lot from appliyng a more painterly thought process to cg lighting.
