I don't believe the price that ADSK paid for softimage. God knows what kind of sneaky business practices have been applied at that time to get those XSI patents.

SI could have been in a much better state, if Adobe had aquired it. But Adobe just never got the importance of 3D and missed the opportunity at that time. So today they have to bundle a lite version of C4D with After Effects.

Probably the team ported to Maya get to a pint where many Softimage features are transported. Like Node Editor just to name one...selection became very similar to Softimage...I wouldn't mind (though my last 10-11 years was spent with Softimage) too much retiring SI if Maya would be as friendly as SI.

About Max...Without plugins, max is a pile of stinky crap (steaming)...with plugins, it's nowhere near elegant as SI....anyway, for me, maya and modo will be the way to go. And ZBrush...of course...

Given SI's track record at ADSK, they couldn't have been worse either. Or do you think that XSI would have been handed to some Photoshop developers?

quote form the softimage forums...

I think it could've been worse. Doing the wrong changes can still be worse than changing nothing at all.

This is the most amusing thing:

"Please note that the right to use the Softimage license will terminate at the end of the transition period if you are still on Subscription. You will be transitioned to the latest release of either 3ds Max or Maya depending on your initial choice. If you want to continue to use your Softimage license after Feb 1, 2016 you should not renew your Subscription contract for a period beyond that date. You will be able to continue to use Softimage but will forfeit any future updates to either 3ds Max or Maya."

To me THIS is the most amusing thing:
"Although this decision is a difficult one, we do believe that by focusing our efforts we can better serve the needs of the media and entertainment industry and provide customers with better products, faster. Autodesk wants to continue its relationship with you into the future. We regret any inconvenience that this may cause, however we believe you will find our new transition product offerings very attractive."

Yeah like they didn't want that from the start, a-holes
