Painting normal maps

Hi all

I have a simple model and I want to paint some normals on it.
I created a new paint layer using a normal map channel, but looks like is not working.
All I get is just black lines as if were painted on a diffuse channel... and once I export the layer just get a grayscale image, but nothing like a normal map.

Does somebody know how to paint a functional normal map??
( Just to be clear. I want to paint the map, not get it from a hi level sculpted mesh )

So far the only way I found to make it work is painting first in a bump layer and then convert it to a normal layer using the "normal map from bump" option, but im sure there must be a better way

you have to paint a pumbmap and convert them into a normal... there is no other way in mudbox....

you could do that with ndo in photoshop...
