How to achieve something close to this look in 3Ds Max

Hello guys!

I need some help making scenes in 3Ds max that when rendered its style were as close as possible as the backgrounds from this animated series:
Foster Mansion

I've been playing with materials and such, but I'm not achieving the result I want to.
Any ideas?
I'm guessing that i should probably disable rendering shadow.

You should better just work with 2D shapes instead of 3D geometry.

If it HAS to be 3D you could use a toon renderer, like V-Ray's built-in VRayToon render effect, or FinalRender's FinalToon. Alternatively you could use a renderer specifically for non-photorealistic rendering, like Pencil or Illustrate.

Well, the background of your image is just a painted plane. The scene itself is rendered using some kind of NPR render.
May be Pencil+, Illustrate! or Cebas.FinalToon.
You can also get similar results without any plugins with any Cell shading technique.

Well the shader is just a flat colour, so no lights needed and a self illuminated shader is fine.

The rig on the other hand should be a bit tricky. Then again it's solid, so you can get away with more.

To mimic the UPA style, all you need to do is create the artwork, flat colors, texture where needed and linework. In Max you would just set up planes and use self illuminated materials. It's really about the artwork that sets it apart, not anything speical in Max.

If you need to do camera moves, you could use some camera mapping on different cutout layers. Three Legged Legs did something kind of similar for their Georgia Power spot. Take a look through their behind the scenes files and you might find something that'll help.

Well, you can use 3d geometry and one omni light set to ambient only with a high multiplier. I have had success getting a cartoon look this way. An omni with a high multiplier washes out the depth but still gives you a sense of 3d when the camera moves.

I know this works in scanline, not sure about mental ray.
