Modeling a Tanker Train Car

I'm having trouble figuring out how to do two things.





1) How do I wrap bolts around the cylinder?

2) How would I shape the bottom on this piece so that it folds onto the cylinder?

Hey man,

For your cap, just extrude an edge loop out.

As for your bolts, there are lots of ways to do that. If you don't need much detail, just use a bump. If you need to model them out, try making a low poly cylinder, and snap its pivot to the center of your tank. Move the geometry to the outside of your tank, and duplicate special. Rotate the new bolt a few degrees over, and repeat. It only takes a few duplications to get it, as the first one you have 1, then 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128.... You could also try using motion paths, the point on poly constraint, or making a straight line of bolts as a single mesh, draw a curve on your surface, and then use that curve to deform your bolt mesh.

Thanks. I managed to get the bolts to look good but I'm still having trouble figuring out how to create that extrusion so that it wraps around the cylinder. I changed the cylinder to a pipe to make it simpler. Is there any sort of tool or technique that would let me drape the bottom of the pipe onto the cylinder to make it flush?

try taking a ring of poly and applying a bend deformer to match the curve of the main train body then just extrude the inner edge loop of the ring up to make the vertical cylinder

on another note of the bend deformer changes a shape of the ring to not be a perfect circle anymore you can also do the same thing but with a lattice. If you move the control points only vertically you should be able to maintain the perfect roundness

If you use the crease tool with smooth mesh, you can try something like this.
