Booleans leave faceted surface

Hi--

I'm trying to make a helical groove in the surface of a cylinder. The only reasonable way I could think to do it was to create a helix and use it in a Boolean operation. Works, but results in a sort of faceted surface on the cylinder adjacent to the helical groove.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I also thought of trying it in Mudbox, but have essentially zero experience with it.

All help appreciated!

Tim

would be easier to extrude a curve that is shaped with your pattern (like a star)... use twist on the extrusion..

Worked like a charm, once I figured out how to make an accurate curve (it's a machine part that I'm simulating). Many thanks!
