Question Mental Ray and Motion Blur Rendering Question

Just a quick question here, not sure if the answer will be like wise but curious non the less.

I am rendering a mental ray scene of two planes in flight, while doing some test renders I have noticed that the renders time are much different than what I thought they would be. Without including all the details, I found that rendering the scene with motion blur reduced the render time.

I was quite surprised by this. I was under the assumed that with the addition of motion blur, the scene would take an increased amount of time to render. This results are quite the opposite. Without motion blur check the scene takes 19 seconds to render, with motion blur check the render time is reduced to 12 seconds.

Why is there such a severe reduction? Does is allow the final gathering to be not have to calculate as accurately?

Anyhow I thought that the results were pretty damn interesting, and would love to know if anyone had an in-depth explanation.

Thank you!
Josh

Are you using Fast Rasterizer with your motion blur, but not when you render the non-motion blurred version?

The only thing that changes between the two renders are the check on/off of motion blur.
