QUARKED! Modelling particle colour change

I'm modelling 3 quarks bumping around in a proton and every time they bump into each other they should swap colours. Problem is, they aren't bumping into each other and I have no idea how to get them to swap. If I can get them to spark (gluons) when in close proximity that would also be fantastic. This video shows the basic effect I am trying to achieve.

My test can be viewed here. How do you think I should fix it?

//My quarks were created via a particle emitter set to Max 3. The Initial State was then changed to hide their creation. They are constrained by an invisible sphere (Particles/Make Collide) and set in motion via a Turbulence Field. I initially attempted to model the quarks individually and then set them to motion as rigid bodies, as I felt this would give me greater control over their appearance and behavior - however I am very new to Maya's dynamics and particles proved easier. This may still prove to be a better solution.
