converting network path to local for playblast playback

what's the best way to change a network path to a local path in Maya?

I want to have a button to playback the playblast from the directory of the currently selected scene.
currently, the script reads the scene's file path and Maya gives me back the network address, but when I use a system("load" + $scenePath), it doesn't seem to respond. if I manually type in the local address, it works flawlessly.

I tried to use tokenize and an array like this here ( to chop off the front, but besides it seeming like a messy solution, it didn't seem to work right.

any suggestions?

I can playblast from network without problem. Have you tried os.normpath?
