Smile Can I be a concept artist and also a 3D artist who knows Maya at the same time?

Is that possible to do both of those jobs? Like I can have my concepts sketched out then I modeling them, transfer them into 3D?

No. You can only ever learn one discipline.

Honestly, I think that most concept artists benefit from knowing how to use a 3D package (with many actually roughing out shapes in 3D before painting over), and many 3D artists would benefit from the ability to draw really well.

However, if you are aiming at working in a company, and being a concept artist who models final models, unless its a really small company, I don't see that happening.

But learn both skills. The worst that can happen is the one improves the other, and you have double the job prospects.

I think you want to know, can you work as a concept artist who also does 3d? Would it b a wast of time because duel purpose jobs are not out there?
That depends on the size of the company/project. A lot of times the concept folks are working and changing while the character build is happening, so you might be too busy, HOWEVER, the few I've worked with did know how to model and use 3d, one was awesome at zbrush for example.... it always helps. Maybe some folks have some more current info for you.

Learn both. You'll end up being more valuable to the company and at the same time have a better understanding for designing things. I know people who are concept artists and 3d modelers professionally. Although, they usually end up doing one or the other 90% of the time.

a Photoshop / ZBrush / Maya (or Max) combo is i guess a pretty good idea as starting point !
But let's be honest you don't became a good concept artist by knowing those tool, you need to have some suprasonic artistic sense , cause competition is though in this area !

To all people starting out in this field...The more you know, the better your chances of finding work are. So, learn and get good with as much as you can. Every piece of software you are proficient with and every talent you nurtured will help.

Hawksprey (of Gears of War and Unreal Tournament fame) is one of the leading concept artists that has successfully integrated 3D into his concept work:

You can definitely learn both. Concept art is basically design (characters, fashion, vehicles, architecture, interior, weapons, gadgets, creatures, environments, etc), and in order to turn your design into something others can see and understand, you need to have strong visual art foundations so you can present your ideas with your artistic skills (be it 2D or 3D or both).

starwaves welcome to cgtalk!

There are a couple of artists knocking around here that are exceptional 2d concept artists and amazing 3d artists.

Artists who draw well make better 3d work if they choose to. I reckon you should do both if you can. Skillful 2d artists usually find that area enough to deal with.
