Weird error, any ideas? "running out of stack space"

Weird error, any ideas? "running out of stack space"

Obviously this seems memory or hard disk related, but this scene worked perfectly fine up until today. It still renders though, just hangs up for several minutes and spits this error back a few times.

Has anyone seen this before? Any idea why a scene would suddenly toss up such an error? I have over 2GB of RAM free of 8GB, and the hard drives all have 100GB or more free.

We had that error once, my "guess" in our case was that mi_trace_continue might have gone into loops where rays keep hitting the same object.
