Backburner not remembering where it left off, why?

I'm using maya 2012 with all the latest service packs. I'm also using backburner 2012.1.1.

When I disconnect the monitor and then reconnect it, backburner does not remember where it left off. In short re rendering frames that already were done and in many instances starting the task over again.

Why does this happen?

Because Backburner was based upon a failed Max version of BackBurner which never really worked?
It sucked in 3dsMax when I used it,.. and it appears its the same in Maya.

Well that was disappointing news. Okay so basically its crap and I should never turn it off until I'm done my rendering?

If backburner is such crap then what should I use instead? I don't need anything complicated. I basically have 5 computers set up as a farm.

There are lots of options for network rendering. This one has a long reputation.
