Difference between 2D and 3D motion vectors?

Hi. I understand 2D motion vectors generate fake motion blur. In what way does a 3D motion vector differ, and what else can it achieve in compositing? Thanks.

Hi,
im not 100% sure as we do rendertime motion blur, but i think 2d is just x and y vector, whereas the 3d vector also does the z-depth motion, useful for objects flying towards the screen, for majority of situations 2d and 3d should give comparable results
