Rivendell, Matthew Rodgers (2D)

Title: Rivendell
Name: Matthew Rodgers
Country: Canada
Software: Photoshop
Submitted: 12th June 2013

This matte painting took out top honors in a contest over at CGChannel. The competition was run by Jonathan Berube, who kindly provided a great plate to work from. The task was to remove any signs of the modern world, then add Rivendell and modify the environment until it looked like it sat in the world of the Hobbit / LOTR films.

I 3d modelled the buildings of Rivendell in Maya and then painted over the renders. Photographic resources were my own photos from China, and from cgtextures.com. Then I reprojected the matte back onto 3D geometry to create and animated camera move below. I also animated the birds and composited in some practical mist effects.

You can see the full animated version over on my website at http://www.cavematty.com/Matte-Paintings

Hey thanks Raffaele!

The original plate was provided by Johnathan Berube. You can see the original plate in his Flickr photostream here:

Also I created an animated version of the shot, with a process breakdown so you can see how it came together. That is on my site at
or directly at youtube here:

Thanks for the prompt

Thanks David! I've always wished for a front page plug on CGTalk, ever since I was an animation first-year some 10 years ago! Pretty exciting to have it at long last And thanks for your suggestions on how to make this piece stronger!

Jaco - Thanks for your kind words. I did the breakdown partly for my reel, but partly just so that my friends and family who are not in the industry could understand what had gone into it

Alexi - Thanks!
