d'artiste Character Modeling 3—Now with free models!
![]() d'artiste Character Modeling 3—Available to pre-order! Hello everyone, we're pumped to finally be able to take the covers off the best d'artiste book yet. d'artiste Character Modeling 3 features the best character modelers and sculptors in game and film, and let's them talk about their process and how they see their art. From the modeling team of the blockbuster PlayStation 3 game ‘Killzone 2’ headed by Guerrilla Games with Massive Black and Liquid Development, to top Hollywood modelers Cesar Dacol Jr. and ILM's Giovanni Nakpil, each page is jammed full of techniques and approaches that will take your modeling skills to the next level. First up we're bringing something new to the d'artiste series: ![]() Creatures in the mesh—Exclusive offer For the first time in a d'artiste book, we are able to push the educational possibilities for 3D artists even further by making two of the featured tutorial characters available as downloadable high-resolution meshes. If you pre-order d'artiste Character Modeling 3 Limited Edition or you are one of the first 500 customers to pre-order d'artiste Character Modeling 3 slipcased edition you'll receive a download link allowing you to start exploring two of the models from the book in your own 3D software. What better way to understand the modeling process than by looking closely at the final meshes of these renowned character modelers? The featured models are Giovanni Nakpil’s quadruped creature, and Cesar Dacol Jr’s Pond Guardian creature. The artists for the latest d'artiste are at the top of their game and include: ![]() Cesar Dacol Jr. ZBrush master Cesar draws on his 20 years of movie industry experience to create three very different creature designs from concept sketch through to textured final render. Cesar’s philosophy on working in the creative industry is well-explained, and his personal gallery showcases the many movie influences in his career. ![]() Production focus: Killzone 2 The d’artiste series’ production focus continues with a behind-the-scenes look at the blockbuster Sony PlayStation 3 game ‘Killzone 2’. Created by Amsterdam-based Guerrilla Games, this unique glimpse of the game character pipeline shows how a major game studio enlists specialist studios like Massive Black and Liquid Development to create the huge number of assets required for a current-generation game. Art Director Jan-Bart van Beek discusses the challenges and techniques of managing the process, and shows with the help of Massive Black and Liquid Development how specific tasks like head modeling and creating the Helghast Sniper class of character was achieved. ![]() Giovanni Nakpil A senior modeler at Industrial Light and Magic, Giovanni showcases his sculptural skills by conceiving a creature in clay, and then taking it through the process of modeling the forms, refining the topology, to the final steps of rendering and presentation. Giovanni’s personal gallery showcases his amazing talent in both 3D and sculpture, and his invited artist gallery includes a who’s who of legendary Hollywood modelers. ![]() d'artiste Character Modeling 3 Limited Edition Ballistic Publishing is offering the d'artiste Character Modeling 3 Limited Edition featuring a black leather-bound cover and a numbered Certificate of Authenticity with a gold foil Ballistic Publishing seal. Only 200 of these limited, numbered copies will be available as extremely valuable and unique collectibles. Pricing and Availability d'artiste Character Modeling 3 is available in two editions: Paperback with slipcase (USD$69); and Limited Edition (USD$170). Publication Details
Each d'artiste book is a hugely rewarding challenge and this book would not have been possible without the great talent and dedication that everyone involved showed from the beginning to the end of the production. Special thanks go out to Cesar Dacol Jr., Giovanni Nakpil, the team at Guerrilla Games and in particular Aryeh Loeb, Rudy Massar, Solomon Temowo and Jan-Bart van Beek, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Sony Computer Entertainment America, the teams at Massive Black and Liquid Development, and every artist who submitted their work for d'artiste Character Modeling 3. Thanks also to the Ballistic team for their efforts to make sure that this was the best d'artiste book yet. We all hope you enjoy Character Modeling 3 and share in the talents of these amazing artists. |

Becoming a part of character modeling series was one of my dreams since I started CG.
Now that dream has come true with a nice surprise. I'm on the back cover! It's first time I made to a cover!! Plus it's a slip case so I have double covers. muahahaha! This is the best b-day presents I've ever get. Thanks Ballistic! __________________

Thank you
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
What an amazing and humbling experience this has been. Everyday was a new high or low, it was never boring. I am so proud to be apart of this book, even more so because of the great people behind the scenes. If it wasn't their tireless enthusiasm for what we all do, none of this would be possible. All I can say is thank you. Thank for allowing me to play. It's been a great opportunity. I truly enjoyed every minute of it. Cesar Dacol Jr. Aka, The Voodoo Monkey __________________
